10 Mistakes Salon Owners are Making Training Their New Stylists

As the leader of the salon, you owe it to yourself and your staff to get someone else in place as the education manager. Many salon owners say they can’t afford to have anyone else do the training. I say you CAN afford it.

Let me walk you through some math.

Let’s say you do a 2 training with your team and it takes you 2 hours to prepare for that training = 4 hours

You charge on average a $100 ticket for a 45 min appointment.

For that 4 hours spent on training, you could have 5 tickets generating $500.

If you paid your education manager $50 an hour for training, that would be 4 hours x $50 = $200

A total saving of $300

Free up your time and generate less stress and you are ahead $300.

Training increases your team’s “learning to earning” curve. The more they learn, the more they earn. An individualized training schedule is critical for each team member as they all have different training needs.

Almost any salon can create 6 figure stylists, you just need to start with a plan.

The more a stylist learns, the more they earn.

Consistent training that follows a plan is the key.

With the TEAM system in place, you are on your way to a salon full of six figure stylists. Plan and update each team member’s training quarterly with your education director.

Planning the training is not something that happens the night before. Consistency is the key, letting you build momentum with success on top of success. Get a calendar. Pick a regular day and time. Schedule the team’s individual and group training.  Document every session. What worked? What deserves an upgrade? This creates a training system that scales with you, not against you.

Getting started is as easy as grabbing a CALENDAR and filling in your plan for the quarter – or better yet the year. We make this super easy with the Salon Associate Accelerator but here’s the idea:

For each training session, fill in

  • Each session’s content,
  • who’s leading it,
  • and who’s it for

CONSISTENCY is vital for building momentum! Consistent skills, consistent drills. Want to make sure your training plan succeeds? Consistency!

  • Pick a regular day and time.
  • Schedule training for the team and for the individuals to make sure their needs are met.
  • Document every session. Yes, take notes. Or risk making the same mistakes over and over. Look for…
  • What worked?
  • What deserves an upgrade?
  • What discoveries were made that can be addressed to make the business stronger?

Don’t rely on one rockstar stylist to train your new associates (good habits AND bad). Establish the salon standard that everyone must meet, and then everyone can learn from everyone.

All stylists services must meet the set standard at your salon. From blow dry, to shampooing, to cutting and color, set the standards at your salon and have all your team members meet the standard level.

A frequent complaint is, “I pay them a great wage/commission, why aren’t they loyal?” People leave high-paying jobs for something more inspiring all the time. According to science, inspiration is more important to us than money. So how does a salon owner inspire loyalty so they stay? Invest in them with training! Show them you believe in them, and they will believe in you.

Winning teams are built on mutual respect and support. Build your team trust by being accountable to each other and watch conflict and friction fade away forever. Want that for your salon? We make it easy: Get the plan at bit.ly/salonsaver

Training systems of old had an associate sweeping the floor, shampooing hair, and learning the salon standards for months, for quarters, or up to a year before getting behind their own chair to generate revenue directly. That model DOES NOT WORK in today’s world. Put your associates to work supporting the team so your pros can double and triple book.

Give yourself permission to ask for help.

The risk is much smaller than you think.

You poured in your money, blood, sweat and tears to achieve your vision. You don’t have to do this all by yourself. Mentors, systems and training programs are out there. Ask for help!

I spent decades learning how to train in the salon. You could do that. OR you could put my experience to work for you with the Salon Associate Accelerator. So you can focus where you’re needed: growing your business. Get it at bit.ly/salonsaver

There is a time and place for trying new things, and it’s in practice mode. Practice needs to come first, and it needs to be done frequently. You don’t want your associates making discoveries (or disasters) on paying customers. We make it easy (and fun) to practice with mannequins at home.

Salon trainers have two professions: hairdresser and educator. They may be a 10 at hairdressing. My question is, “Are you a 10 at teaching?” Upgrade your teaching skills to the level of your hairdressing and you will change people’s lives.
